The culinary star of Steam is undoubtedly their dim sum selection. Each bite reveals layers of expertly crafted flavors and textures. The Pork & Shrimp Shui Mai (4 PC) showcase plump, juicy morsels with a delicate balance of seafood sweetness and savory pork richness, while the Crispy Shrimp Balls (3 PC) offer an irresistible crunch paired with a luscious, tangy sauce that customers rave about. Vegetarian options like the Pea Shoot Dumplings (3 PC) and Mushroom Dumplings (3 PC) highlight the kitchen’s skill in creating subtle yet deeply satisfying plant-based delights. Notably, Steam shines with an impressive selection of gluten-free dumplings, a rare find that impressed diners for their generous portions and delicate, water-based preparation.

Beyond dim sum, the menu features a variety of dishes that capture the essence of Asian cuisine with bold, vibrant flavors. The 24-Hour Braised Beef Noodle Soup is a comforting, aromatic bowl that envelops your senses with rich broth and tender slices of beef. For stir-fried specialties, the Szechuan Chicken delivers a spicy kick balanced by savory notes, while the Seafood Trio Fried Rice with Fish Roe offers a luxurious, umami-packed bite. Fans of classic dishes will appreciate the General TSO Chicken—crispy, tangy, and perfectly sauced—as well as the HK Pan Fried Noodle with Beef, Chicken, and Seafood, which boasts a wonderful mixture of textures and flavors.

Toning down the intensity, the restaurant’s selection of refreshing, health-conscious tonic broths is unique. The Tickle And Titillate Sweet Tonic Broth, crafted with Nashi pear and arctic fungus, offers a subtly sweet and nourishing sip that refreshes your palate. The Detox And Levitate Vegan Tonic Broth is similarly crafted to elevate your dining experience with its macrobiotic blend—a testament to the thoughtful, wellness-oriented dimension of their menu.

Customer feedback reflects a well-rounded dining experience: while some note that dim sum prices can add up quickly, the quality and flavorful execution justify the indulgence. Many patrons highlight standout dishes like the Cumin Lamb—perfectly spiced and rich—and the generous, gluten-free dumpling options that make Steam a rare find for those with dietary restrictions. Service is consistently described as attentive and friendly, complementing the restaurant’s polished yet inviting atmosphere.

If you're in Palo Alto and craving authentic, thoughtfully prepared Asian cuisine with a contemporary edge, Steam offers a vibrant dining experience that combines tradition and innovation. Whether indulging in their artful dim sum selections or savoring the bold flavors of their main dishes, your taste buds are sure to leave feeling both satisfied and delighted.

Good food, a bit pricey. Try the crispy shrimp balls, they’re really good and so is the sauce. The main dishes are priced more competitively than the small dishes; if you eat mostly dim sum the price quickly adds up. 18% gratuity is added to all orders. Kitchen closes at 8:30 PM but the place stays open until 9. There is dog friendly outdoor seating.

The schezwan chicken and the eggplant with chicken claypot stood out the most. The rest of the dishes were average. The dumplings were disappointing as they were pretty bland. Service was good.

The food overall was nice and the environment was beautiful. Only the steam riceballs were a little unfully cooked

Solid place to get Chinese food that’s a little cheaper than Taste down the street. They’re also a good place to get dim sum in Palo Alto (although in my opinion the dim sum prices are still pricey, but that’s Palo Alto for you). This time we got the cumin lamb and sautéed broccoli with some white rice. The cumin lamb was very good. It was a bit salty, but this dish usually is. The service was a little slow this time. The cumin lamb was served before the rice so we had to wait a little to get our rice to eat with the dish. But I’ve gone before and haven’t had that problem with the service before so it could just be that time. The inside’s really new and clean. It feels modern and warm. Also the bathroom’s surprisingly large and nice. It definitely feels like an expensive restaurant bathroom. Parking: There are many parking garages in Palo Alto so it’s not too hard for us to find parking

They have a total of seven different kinds of gluten free dumplings (four with meat or seafood, and three vegetarian ones). Having so many gluten free dumpling options is almost unheard of. We ordered all of them and were very impressed. Tasty, generous portions and clean feeling because of the water-based cooking.

Good place to get dim sum, but not too many options. The dumplings and buns we got were delicious! But the lotus leaf was not our favorite.

Great services and great food. I love the huge veggie plates. They also have chrysanthemum tea, which can be harder to find and it’s delicious.

This place was such a treat and everything was so good! All of the flavors were great, savory, fresh, and satisfying. We ordered the sautéed spinach and garlic, the XLB, the Shrimp Xiu Mai, Taiwanese noodles, custard buns, and BBQ pork buns. All dishes were great! I loved the xiu mai and my husband loved the bbq pork buns especially.
